Abstract

PURPOSE: To effect appropriate recirculation of exhaust gas according to the load of an engine equipped with a supercharger, by employing such an arrangement that exhaust gas is recirculated from the downstream side of a turbine when the load is lower than a predetermined level and from the upstream side of the turbine when the load is higher than said predetermined level.
CONSTITUTION: A supercharger 3 including a turbine 4 and a blower 5 is disposed in intake and exhaust passages 1, 2 of an engine E. The intake and exhaust passages 1, 2 are communicated to each other via an exhaust gas recirculating passage 7, which is branched, by means of a valve, into a downstream side exhaust gas recirculating passage 9 communicated to a portion of the exhaust passage 2 located on the downstream side of the turbine 4 and an upstream side exhaust gas recirculating passage 11 communicated to a portion of the exhaust passage 2 located on the upstream side of the turbine 4. The valve 14 is opened and closed by a diaphragm means 15 in which pressures in the intake and the exhaust passages are acted. That is, the passage 7 is communicated to the downstream passage 9 when the load is lower than a predetermined level and to the upstream passage 11 when the load is higher than the predetermined level.
