Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful for perfumes, etc., in high purity, by the oxidative polymerization of 2-vinylcrotonaldehyde contained in the dehydration product prepared from the aldol condensation product of acetaldehyde with n-butyraldehyde with molecular oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of the titled compound prepared by the dehydration of the aldol condensation product of acetaldehyde with n-butyraldehyde, with 2-vinylcrotonaldehyde, or the fraction rich in the titled compound given by the further fractional distillation of the above-mentioned mixture, is brought into contact with molecular oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen, preferably at 10W100°C, to oxidize and polymerize said 2-vinylcrotonaldehyde. Addition of a transition metallic salt may reduce the reaction time. The resultant mixture is then distilled in the presence of preferably water or steam, and the polymerization product mentioned above may be separated as a residue to give the titled compound in high purity.
