Abstract

PURPOSE: To purify crude methylal containing methanol as a major impurity, with simple operation, by distilling the crude methylal in the presence of a specific amount of water.
CONSTITUTION: Grude methylal obtained by the reaction of methanol with formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde (pref. crude methylal prepared by distilling the reaction mixture obtained above) is mixed with 2W50pts.wt., esp. 3W30pts.wt. of water (city water can be adequately use) based on 1pt.wt. of methanol existing in the crude methylal as an impurity, and distilled to obtain high purity methylal.
