Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful for a perfum, etc. in high purity through the fractional distillation, by treating 2-vinylcrotonaldehyde contained in a dehydration product of the aldol condensation product prepared from acetaldehyde and n-butyraldehyde with a radical generating agent.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of the titled compound prepared by dehydrating the aldol condensation product between acetaldehyde and n-butyraldehyde with 2-vinylcrotonaldehyde or a fraction rich in the titled compound prepared by the further fractional distillation of the mixture is treated with a radical generating agent having a decomposition temperature (at which the half-life is 10hr) of 130°C or below, e.g. a diacyl peroxide, as a catalyst, preferably, in an amount of 0.1W20wt% based on the mixture, at 30W160°C. The resultant mixture is then distilled to separate the 2-binylcrotonaldehyde as a residue by the treatment, and the titled compound is obtained in high purity.
