Abstract

PURPOSE: Trimethoxybenzoic acid, which is useful as a medicine or intermediate of agricultural chemical, is heat treated in the presence of water, mineral acid and activated carbon and cooled, after the insoluble part is removed, to produce crystals of purified product with industrial advantage.

The present method can remove the tar and simultaneously hydrolyze the esters to free acid, thus giving high-purity product in high yield.
