Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare highly pure thioglycolic acid, useful as a raw material of cold-wave lotion, etc., in high yield, with a simple apparatus, by treating an aqueous solution of crude thioglycolic acid containing impurities such as thiodiglycolic acid, with activated charcoal.
CONSTITUTION: An acidic aqueous solution of crude thioglycolic acid containing thiodiglycolic acid and/or dithioglycolic acid, produced as by-products of thioglycolic acid, is treated with activated charcoal. The by-products are exclusively adsorbed to the activated charcoal, leaving the highly purified thioglycolic acid. The treatment with activated charcoal may be batch-wise or continuous. The used activated charcoal can be easily regenerated by alkali treatment, and the adsorbed by-products are recovered by the regeneration process.
