Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an amino acid readily and economically, by combining two process of hydrolyzing an aminonitrile with an alkali, followed by ion exchange through electrolysis.
CONSTITUTION: In the first process an aqueous solution of NaOH (or KOH) is added to an aqueous solution of aminonitrile (e.g., aminoacetonitrile, α- or β- aminopropionitrile) and stirred under heating, to give a Na or K salt of an amino acid (e.g., glycine, α- or β-alanine). The electrolyte cell 1 is provided with the two cation exchange membranes 4a and 4c as disphragms between two electrodes. The aqueous solution of 11 of amino acid salt obtained in the first process is made to flow into the ion exchange chamber 7 and subjected to ion exchange, while an aqueous solution of a mineral acid is fed to the anode chamber 5 of the electrolytic cell 1 and an aqueous solution of NaOH (or KOH) is fed to the cathode chamber 6, to give an amino acid and simultaneously NaOH(KOH) in the cathode 6. An acid is not consumed and waste liquor will not occur. Reduction of energy.
