PURPOSE:To form a light directing path pattern easily and to obtain a light directing film of high quality easily by forming a film of alkoxide on a substrate and then by forming an amorphous film by heating the film after hydrolysis. CONSTITUTION:Onto a substrate, a mixture of Ti, Ta, Ba, etc., such as an additive for refractive index control, and alkoxide which consists essentially of alkoxide silicate, such as tetraalkoxysilane and condensed ethyl silicate, is applied as a glass forming material in the spinner method, etc., to form a film of alkoxide, which is brought into contact with gas having saturated steam at the normal temperature for hydrolysis. This gelling film is heated to expel excessive moisture, etc., in the film, thereby forming an amorphous oxide film. Consequently, the refractive index can be adjusted over a wide range, the transparent light directing film of high quality can easily be formed and the pattern of the light directing path can easily be formed.
