Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture Mg(OH)2 with superior crystal form, crystal size and dispersibility by hydrating inert MgO, in the presence of a predetermined amount of acid or Mg salt, obtd. by calcination at a high temp.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous slurry is perpared by adding MgO obtd. by calcination at ≥1,400°C and acid or its Mg salt. The amount of the acid added is the sum of an amount corresponding to ≥0.5% of the amount of the starting material MgO by equiv. and an amount corresponding to the amount of CaO contained in the starting material by equiv. The slurry is agitated at ≥about 60°C to cause hydration, and the resulting Mg(OH)2 crystals are purified by washing and dried at need.
