Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce α-iron oxyhydroxide with a superior needle-like crystal shape and a uniform grain size distribution without branching by adding an aq. soln. of a ferric salt to an aq. soln. of an alkali after which the resulting suspension of ferric hydroxide is adjusted to pH 10.5W12.5 with an alkali carbonate and aged.
CONSTITUTION: An aq. soln. of a ferric salt such as ferric sulfate is added to an aq. soln. of an alkali such as NaOH to prepare a suspension contg. ferric hydroxide precipitates in a neutral region of pH 6W8. The suspension is then adjusted to pH 10.5W12.5 with an alkali carbonate such as Na2CO3, K2CO3 or (NH4)2CO3 and allowed to stand at room temp. for about 200 hr to be aged, thus growing uniform α-iron oxyhydroxide crystals with a superior needle-like crystal shape.
