Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance vibration resistance, impact resistance and processibility by a method wherein a rough surface layer of a compound consisting of one or more of Al, Ti, Zr or Hf and Co is formed on a surface of a Co substrate material to obtain a carrier and a platinum group metal is supported on said carrier.
CONSTITUTION: On a surface of a substrate material comprising Co or containing 95% or more Co, one or more of a metal selected from Al, Ti Zr or Hf is deposited by conventional means such as a flame spraying method and, thereafter, a rough surface layer is formed by applying heat treatment to obtain the catalyst carrier. Subsequently, a platinum group metal is supported on said carrier to pepare the catalyst for oxidizing an exhaust gas. A thickness of the aforementioned rough surface layer is pref. about 0.001W0.5mm and, in order to support said platinum group metal to said rough surface layer, a spray method or a coating method can be applied. The obtained catalyst can be molded into an optional shape because said substrate material has good strength and ductility.
