Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a flame-retardant polyamide having improved mechanical properties, coloring properties, and flow properties for molding, by reacting a mixture of monomers forming a copolymer of nylon 66 under heating in the presence of equimolecular amounts of melamine and cyanuric acid, and water.
CONSTITUTION: Equimolecular amounts of melamine and cyanuric acid are added to a mixture of monomers forming 97W90wt% nylon 66 component and 3W30wt%, preferably 5W20wt% other polyamide component, e.g., nylon 6, etc. in such way that preferably 2W25wt% melamine cyanurate based on final product composition is made. Water is added in an amount to be required for the reaction between melamine and cyanuric acid and not less than 5wt% based on the weight of the polymn. compsn. The reaction is carried out at 200W300°C, e.g., at 250°C for 0W3hr, and at 260°C for 0W1hr, to give the desired flame-retardant polyamide.
