Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a phenolic resin having improved hue and flexibility, by reacting an oily reaction product prepared by reacting a cyclopentadiene with phenolic monomers as a part of a phenolic component with an aldehyde component.
CONSTITUTION: (i) A cyclopentadiene monomer is polymerized with (ii) a phenolic monomer at a weight ratio between the components (i) and (ii) of 60W35:35W65 under heating at 210W250°C for 0.5W6hr to give (A) an oily reaction product having an average molecular weight of 150W1,000, preferably 150W600. A phenolic component containing preferably 40wt% or more the oily reaction product (A) is then reacted with (B) an aldehyde component, e.g. formaldehyde.
