CONSTITUTION:A luminous tube 1 provided with electrodes 2, 3, thermally operating element 4 such as bimetal switch, and surge absorbing element 26 are contained in the inside of an outer tube 7 of a high pressure sodium lamp, and a rare gas such as xenon, krypton, or argon with pressure of 100 Torr or less is sealed. Thus, a part of energy of surge voltage which is generated by operation of the bimetal switch 4 on starting is consumed through discharging between the contact points to reduce the surge voltage, and to prevent the dielectric breakdown of the stabilizer 8 and wirings in cooperation with the absorbing element 26.
