Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect accurately the slag passing start point into nozzle, by bringing the probe coil close to the ladle nozzle, and detecting the damping start point of lift-off fluctuation electric signal occurring in the coil along with vibrations of the nozzle.
CONSTITUTION: When pouring molten steel 10 in a ladle 30 into a continuous casting facility 40, a driving device 50 is operated when slag 11 is about to approach the ladle bottom so as to bring a probe coil 44 close to a nozzle 12, and the coil is excited by passing a constant current at fixed frequency. When the molten steel passes through the nozzle, the nozzle vibrates to fluctuate the distance between the coil and molten steel, thereby generating a lift-off fluctuation electric signal, which is detected in a detecting device 48. Since the signal is damped suddenly when the slag flows into the nozzle, a cylinder 32 is automatically operated by a control signal from the detecting device, thereby closing a gate 34.
