Abstract

PURPOSE: To deodorize a malodorous gas by absorbing and oxidizing the gas under the optimum conditions by a method wherein the pH of a sodium hypochlorite solution and the mol ratios of sodium hypochlorite to methyl mercaptan and methyl sulfide are each adjusted within the ranges of specified value.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl mercaptan and methyl sulfide are mixed with air in an air chamber 11 from a bomb 6, introduced into an absorbing tower 1 through a damper 13 and orifices 14, 15 while being counter-current contacted with an absorbing liquid, which is pumped up by means of a pump 7 from the inside of a tank 5 and scattered from an upper portion of a packing 2 in the tower, and discharged outside the system through a demister 3. A sodium hypochlorite solution, which pH is adjusted to 9.5W10.5, is used as the absorbing liquid, and the mol ratios of sodium hypochlorite to methyl mercaptan and methyl sulfide are each set at larger than 1.4×102 and 0.7×102, thus completely absorbing and oxidizing the malodorous components.
