Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the deflection of an electron beam in the weld line direction by packing magnetic material in the spacing of the butt groove of material having residual magnetism then performing electron beam welding.
CONSTITUTION: After magnetic material 10 is beforehand packed in the groove spacing of the works 1, 2, the works are electron beam welded along the groove. Since magnetic flux has the nature of preferentially passing through the places where magnetic permeability is larger, it flows to the works not through space but through this magnetic material because of the packed magnetic material. The electron beam is deflected by the floating magnetic fields in the space and therefore the passage of the magnetic flux through the foregoing magnetic material results in the considerably decreased stray magnetic fields, thereby permitting the prevention of deflection. Since it turns out that the magnetic material to be packed forms weld metal after welding, it is necessary to contain the alloy components to satisfy the mechanical characteristics thereof. In addition, the shape is powder, bar, plate or other and particularly in the case of steel target, iron powder and cut wires are desirable.
