Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the deflection of an electron beam by the residual magnetism of a material to be welded and the generation of a weld defect in the electron beam welding of the material to be welded consisting of magnetic materials, by packing powder of the same material as that of a base metal in the space of the groove of the material to be welded. CONSTITUTION:In welding the narrow square groove of materials 1a and 1b to be welded having magnetic characteristic such as steel material with an electron beam 2, powder 5 of a material of the same quality as that of the materials to be welded is packed in the groove and the materials are welded. The influence of the residual magnetism increased on account of the gap in the groove part is eliminated as the gap is closed by the packing 5 and therefore the electron beam concentrates correctly to the groove part without deflection, thereby forming the weld metal of superior quality. If the packing of the powder metal 5 is difficult, magnets 6a, 6b are mounted to the materials 1a, 1b to attract the powder 5 to the groove, after which the magnets 6a and 6b are removed and the material is welded by the electron beam.
