Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a good weld zone which does not recess from the surfaces of base metals by placing a shim member slightly larger than the plate thickness between butt parts and performing welding in electron beam welding of butt members.
CONSTITUTION: If a shim material 5 slightly larger than the plate thickness of welding objects 1 is placed between butt parts and electron beam welding is carried out, heat capacity is smaller in the parts projecting from the surfaces of the base metals and therefore the entire part thereof melts and becomes part of the weld metal. Hence, despite the presence of any undercut or recess in the surface of the weld zone, that part is buried, and the weld zone assumes a good bead shape without recessing from the thickness of the base metals. According to this method, no inconveniences are experienced in aligning the positions of weld groove lines.
