Abstract
PURPOSE:To narrow the weld width and to reduce the roughness on the melting zone surface and to speed up the welding speed by projecting a laser beam from the outward and inward of the can barrel and forming the depth of penetration at a can barrel blank to an extent not to attain the rear of the blank. CONSTITUTION:The can barrel blank 11 is formed cylindrically and both edges 13 and 13 of the can barrel blank 11 are butted against each ether and the laser beam 21 is projected thereon from the outside peripheral direction and both the edges 13 and 13 are subjected to butt welding. At this time, the output of the laser beam is regulated in accordance with the travel speed of the blank 11 and the laser welding is performed so that an outward melting zone 18 with the melting depth of about 1/3 of the material thickness of the blank 11 is formed. Further, the laser beam 21 is projected from the inward of the can barrel and the laser welding is performed so that an inward melting zone 19 with the melting depth of about 1/3 of the plate thickness of the can barrel blank 11 is formed.
