Abstract

PURPOSE: To insolbule anode for electrolysis of improved maintenance characteristic bt forming the intermediate layer of manganese oxide containing nonstoichiometric compound and the surface layer of platinum group metals or their oxide on a conductive metal substrate.
CONSTITUTION: After the surfaces of a conductive metal substrate such as Ti plate or other have been etched, the solution of Mn compound such as MnOx (x is 1.5 to 2.0) or mixed solution of Mn compound and tin compound is coated thereon by using a solvent such as alcohols and is then dried. The intermediate layer is preferably about 5 to 50g/m2. Next, one or more kinds of platinum group metals, e.g., Pt, Ru, Ir or their oxides are coated to a thickness of about 1/10 that of the intermediate layer. The chlorine overvoltage of this double layer electrode is 20 to 100mV in a current density region of 1 to 100A/dm2 and the electrode catalytic activity by the surface layer markedly appears. Even if the surface layer dislodges, the intermediate layer is highly corrosion resistant to anode environments and does not cause peeling.
