Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase the strength of the solidified product and to protect the product from hydrolysis, by using a copolymeric prepolymer consisting of a resorcinol compound, a phenolic compound and formaldehyde at a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:A resorcinol compound, a phenolic compound and formaldehyde are condensed e.g in the presence of an acid catalyst to give a prepolymer having a nonvolatile content of >=70wt% and a molar ratio (resorcinol compound residual group)/(phenolic compound residual group) of 0.5-0.9/1.0. For example, the prepolymer is compounded with a radioactive substance, paraformaldehyde, fillers, etc. and condensed to solidify. USE:Useful for solidification of waste products, e.g. ion exchange resins for the cooling materials of nuclear reactors, etc.
