Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve adhesiveness with substrates, make respose high and coloring density high through low voltage driving and prolong life by continuously changing the vapor diposition angle of electrochromic (EC) material from 0° up to the specified angle with respect to substrate normal in performing vapor deposition.
CONSTITUTION: After display electrodes 2 are formed on, e.g., a glass substrate 1 and an insulation layer 4 is covered on its lead parts, the substrate 1 is so disposed that the normal direction of the substrate 1 and the flying direction of vapor deposition particles coincide through vacuum deposition. While the substrate 1 is being heated at 100°C, WO3, is evaporated at the vapor deposition rate of 4Å/sec. from the filament of W. After 10 seconds, the substrate 1 is rotated at 2°/sec. until the flying direction becomes 50° to the substrate normal while the vapor deposition is being continued. With the WO3 film 3a being held at a vapor deposition angle 50°, the vapor deposition is further continued to form a WO3 film 3b. Next, said substrate is sealed to a substrate 5 having a counter electrode 6 by means of an adhesive agent 8, an electrolyte solution 7 is injected therebetween, an indium ball is pushed into an injection port 9 and further it is sealed by means of an epoxy-base adhesive, whereby the EC display body is produced. In this way, the WO3 layer assumes columnar structure and becomes porous, resulting in the increased contact area with the electrolyte 7 and producing superior effect.
