Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the variable range of ion accelerating voltages by adopting several kinds of ionic orbits with distinct radii in the deflecting field of a fixed intensity. CONSTITUTION:Slits S3, S3' are provided on the orbits described by extending the circular orbits r1, r2 which is assumed in the field generated by the magnet 4 and radii of which are distinct from each other, ions passing through the orbits determined by these slits are alternately introduced to the ion detector 6. As shown in the graph which illustrates the relation between the ion accelerating voltage and the mass unmber, when r1 is adopted while the ion accelerating voltage is changed from V1 to V2, the range from M2' to M3 can be scanned, when r2 is adopted, the range from M1 to M2 can be done. That is, the range from M1 to M3 can be scanned by changing the accelerating voltage from V1 to V2, a wider range of mass number can be scanned as compared with the unit with only one orbit radius, conversely, the reduction of sweep range of ion accelerating voltage is possible for the same mass number range scanning.
