Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the wire electrode of an electrical discharge machining apparatus from breaking even when the thickness of a workpiece varies by varying the machining current or capacitor capacity of a power supply for the apparatus in response to the machining speed acceleration or deceleration. CONSTITUTION:There occurs an electrical discharge between a wire electrode 1 and a workpiece 2 to be machined by the current from a pulse power supply 3. The change in thickness of the workpiece 2 is produced as a machining voltage Eg to a speed distributor 5, which thereupon controls X and Y drive motors 6 and 7 to thereby momentarily control the movement (position) of the workpiece 2. The machining speed from the distributor 4 is also transmitted through a computer 8 to the power supply 3 to thereby increase the machining current or the capacity of a capacitor 9 when the thickness of the workpiece 2 is increased and the feeding speed is decelerated and to oppositely abruptly decrease the machining current or the capacity of the capacitor to miminum value when the thickness of the workpiece 2 is reduced and then gradually increase it to an optimum value.
