CONSTITUTION: A derivative of 2-acetoxymethyl-2-methyl penam-3-carboxylic acid II is prepared by reacting a penicillin-1-oxide I (R1 is amino or substituted amino; R2 is carboxy-protecting group) with acetic acid anhydride in the presence of Mg. The reaction is pref. carried out in an organic solvent such as pentane or hexane, at 70W150°C for 0.5W20 hours, using excessive Mg and acetic acid anhydride.
