Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high-grade low chlorinated copper phthalochanine in high yield, by reacting a phthalimide derivative of monosodium or monopotassium chlorophthalate with urea and a copper salt.
CONSTITUTION: Monosodium or monopotassium chlorophthalate, if necessary together with phthalic acid (anhydride) or phthalimide, is suspended in a high- boiling inert organic solvent. A mineral acid (or its ammonium salt) is added to the suspension, and 2W4 moles per mole of the total phthalic acid component of ammonia gas is introduced into the suspension at 130W230°C with stirring to form a phthalimide, which is condensed with 1.5 moles or more per mole of the total phthalic acid component of urea and 20W30 mole% of a copper salt in the presence of a catalyst at 140W230°C for 1W7 hr.
