Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a polyhydric alcohol useful as a main raw material of polyurethanes and as a secondary raw material, e.g. a crosslinking agent, etc., by reacting a polyepoxy compound with a secondary alkanolamine, and optionally adding an alkylene oxide to the product.
CONSTITUTION: A nitrogen-containing polyhydric alcohol having ≥4, preferably 6W12 OH groups is prepared by reacting a polyepoxy compound having two or more epoxy groups in a molecule (pref. polyglycidyl ether) with a secondary alkanolamine (pref. dialkanolamine). The compound can be used as a main raw material of polyurethane and as a secondary raw material, e.g. crosslinking agents, modifiers, chain extenders, etc., however, its use is limited due to the high hydroxyl group number. Therefore it is preferred to prepare a nitrogen-containing polyether polyol by the addition-reaction of the compound with an alkylene oxide (pref. ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide).
