Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform stable and highly efficient coupling by using two kinds of rod lenses. CONSTITUTION:The first rod lens 2 which comprises cutting a focusing type transparent body whose refractive indices gradually reduce from the center toward the periphery within the section perpendicular to the central axis so as to have the length of nearly the (2N-1)/4 period (N is positive integer) of the zigzag period of light and both end faces perpendicular to the central axis and the semi-cylindrical second rod lens 3 comprising cutting a focusing type transparent body in the plane inclusive the central axis so as to have the length of nearly the (2N'-1)/4 period (N' is positive integer) of the zigzag period and the end faces perpendicular to the central axis are prepared. An optical fiber 1 is so disposed that its central axis aligns to the central axis of the rod lens 2 and the rod lens 3 is so disposed that its cut face 4 opposes to the optical guide 5 on a substrate 6 by way of a thin air layer. As a result, the light beam emitted from the optical fiber 1 is coupled stably and highly efficiently to the optical guide 5 by means of the focusing action of the rod lenses 2, 3 and the tunnel effect of the thin air layer.
