Abstract

CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula IV: (R1 is H or lower alkyl group; R2 is lower alkyl group; n is 1 or 2) is reacted with an optically active carboxylic acid to give a novel compound of formula V: (R× CO is optically active acyl group), which is separated into diastereiosomers of formulas II and III by fractional crystallization. The compound of formula I is oxidized to form an 14-oxo derivative, hydrolyzed, subjected to ring closure, and oxidized to give a steroid of formula III. After protecting the OH group, the compound of formula II is hydrolyzed with an alkali, oxidized, subjected to ring closure, and oxidized to afford the steriod of formula III.
