Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as perfumes in high yield and purity in a short step industrially advantageously form an ester of an α-hydroxyfatty acid and an ester of an α-halo-fatty acid, which are inexpensive, available, and easily synthesized, through a novel intermediate.
CONSTITUTION: An ester of an α-hydroxyfatty acid of formula I: (R1 is 1W5C alkyl group; R1 is H or 1W8C alkyl group) is condensed with an ester of an α- halo-fatty acid of formula II: (R11 is 1W5C alkyl group; X is cl, Br, or I; R2 is H or 1W8C alkyl group) to give a novel diester derivative of 8-oxaglutaric acid, which is reacted with a trialkyl silyl halide and an alkali metal to form an acyloin. The novel 3,4-disilyloxy-2,5-dihydrofuran derivative thus obtained is oxidized with an oxidizing agent, e.g. copper acetate, to form a dihydrofuranone derivative of formula VI.
