Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the supercooling of this exhaust purifier by air exhausted from cylinders, which do not function, by bringing partial cylinders to non-working conditions while flowing back air flowing into the exhaust pipes of the cylinders to an intake system when the load of this multicylinder engine is low.
CONSTITUTION: This multicylinder engine 1 that fuel injection valves 2aW2f are arranged to each cylinder #1W#6 is divided into two pairs of groups by means of two exhaust pipes 6a, 6b, and this exhaust purifier 19 is further mounted to a joining exhaust pipe 6 located at the rear portion. The exhaust pipe 6b of the partial cylinders is communicated with an intake pipe 3 by means of a reflux passage 16 provided with a reflux control valve 11. Negative pressure is transmitted to a negative pressure chamber 11a of the control valve 11 by means of a magnet valve 12 controlled by means of an air fuel ratio control circuit 8 being subject to the signals of the quantity of air and concentration sensors 5, 7. The cylinders #4W#6 are brought to non-functioning conditions by means of a cylinder number control circuit 20 when the speed of the engine is low, and air flowing in the exhaust system 6b is flowed back to the intake pipe 3.
