Abstract

PURPOSE: Using a specific phosphorus compound as an isomerization catalyst, is heat treated methyl-Δ-4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride to effect the isomerization, thus producing a liquid isomer mixture that is suitably used for a curing agent of epoxy resins.
CONSTITUTION: The isomerization of methyl-Δ-4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride is effected by heat treating it in the presence of a phosphorus compound, in which the phosphorus compound is a compound of the formula P(X)nR3 or P(X)n(XR')3 (R is H, organic residue; R' is organic residue; X is O, S; n is 0, 1), such as triethylphosphine, triphenylphosphine, triethylphosphite. As the starting material, is suitably used a mixture of 100W20 wt% of 3-methyl-Δ-4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and 0W80 wt% of 4-methyl-Δ-4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride. Preferably, the amount of the catalyst used is 0.1W4 parts by wt per 100 parts of the starting material and the reaction temperature is 80W250°C.
