Abstract
PURPOSE: To form a tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and its derivative into isomer compounds for use as a curing agent of an epoxy resin, by treating the tetrahydrophthalic acid and its derivative in the presence of a low-priced isomerization catalyst of a halogen and a halogenated alkaline (earth) metal under heating.
CONSTITUTION: A tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and its derivative shown by the formula (R is 1W6C alkyl or alkenyl; n is 0W4) are treated in the presence of an isomerization catalyst of a halogen and a halogenated alkaline (earth) metal under heating at 120W250°C to give their isomer compounds. Potassium iodide and lithium bromide are cited as the most preferably isomerization catalysts and the amount of the catalyst is not less then 0.005wt% (preferably 0.01W3.0wt/) based on the starting material shown by the formula. Δ4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and its 3-or 4-methyl derivative may be cited as the starting material shown by the formula and the main reaction is a reaction wherein these double bonds shift to Δ1-position so that the isomer compounds become liquid.
