Abstract

PURPOSE: The isomerization of methyl-Δ4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride is effected in the presence of a specific catalyst to produce a liquid carboxylic anhydride mixture mainly containing low moisture-absorbing methyl-Δ1-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, which is useful as a starting material for polyester.
CONSTITUTION: Preferably a palldium catalyst on a supporter such as carbon and sulfur or sulfor compound such as dibutyl sulfide are used as catalyst to isomerize methyl-Δ4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (methyl-Δ4-THPA) to a mixture of liquid polycarboxylic anhydride mainly containing methyl-Δ1tetrahydrophthalic anhydride. The catalyst is removed from the reaction mixture by filtration of decantation to give liquid acid anhydride with high low-temperature stability. The amount of sulfur of sulfur compound added is 1W200ppm based on methyl-Δ4-THPA calculated as S element.
USE: Curing agent for epoxy resins.
