Abstract

PURPOSE: A molten mixture of maleic anhydride and other cyclic acid anhydride is combined with crude trans-1,3-pentadiene to effect the reaction, thus producing the titled substance for improving the air-curability of unsaturated polyester in high yield with no use of diluent.
CONSTITUTION: A molten mixture of maleic anhydride and other cyclic acid anhydride such as 3-methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride or methyl-hexahydrophthalic anhydride is combined continuously or batchwise with crude trans-1,3-pentadiene to effect the Diels-Alder reaction, thus producing the objective compound. The above mixture preferably contains 95W50mol% of maleic anhydride and 5W50 mol% of other cyclic acid anhydrides. The addition of the cyclic acid anhydride depresses the undesirable formation of gel polymers.
