Abstract
PURPOSE:To make it possible to measure the surface stress of air-cooled reinforced glass non-destructively, promptly, highly accurately and always stably by separating the optical transmission components of the surface layer of the glass. CONSTITUTION:The glass prepared by the float method is cooled with air for reinforcement. A monmchromatic light 4 is incident at 8 upon the surface layer of air-cooled reinforced glass 2 so that it may be propagated therein. After that, the light is projected from a prism 10 so that it is separated into two optical components of TE and TM waves which vibrate in parallel and at a right angle with respect to the surface of the glass. Those optical components are converted at 12 into dark and bright trains, upon which the surface treass of the glass 2 is measured.
