Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent a second pollution by catching waste gas dust containing metals of a sludge-melting furnace in a molten material to melt the metals, cooling and solidifying the metals present in sludge to form insoluble metals, said molten material being maintained at a predetermined temperature by controlling means.
CONSTITUTION: Sludge containing Cr, copper, etc. is molten by an arc furnace 1, and introduced through a coupling part 3 into a melting chamber 4. The temperature is maintained by a detector 7, a temperature controlling device 8 and a burner 9 at a temperature of above a boiling point of the molten material and below boiling points of the oxides of metals present in the collected dust. Waste gas from the furnace 1 is collected in a waste gas treating apparatus 11, passed through a supply line 14, catched in said molten material, flows out from a discharge part 6, and is cooled and solidified to form a glassy solid. Since the metals in the dust turn into network-forming ions and is solidified, there is no danger of a second pollution caused by elution due to rain water at reclaiming time. It is not necessary to solidify the metals with a large amount of cement.
