Abstract

PURPOSE: An inexpensive, good response electrode is provided by using a diaphragm having a thin denser layer at the bottom and thick coarse layer, bothe layers being the same material whose density continuously changing.
CONSTITUTION: In an oxygen electrode, for example, the cathode 1 is covered with insulating supporter except for the both upper and lower ends, and fixed to the center of a cylindrical plastic insulating materail 3. The space in the material 3 is filled with saturtated KCl solution anolyte in which the anode 4 is dipped. A diaphragm 7 encloses the upper end to hold the liquid 5. The lower end of the so constructed oxygen electrode is dipped in sample liquid. Then, O2 in the sample passes through the diaphragm 7 and into the liquid 5. This causes the liquid conductivity to be increased which allows the O2 concentration in the liquid to be measured. The diaphragm 7 is made relatively thin and dense layer 9 near the bottom, and less dense 8 at other portion. The dense bottom layer 9 provides mechaical strength to the diaphragm 7, most part 8 permitting O2 to be easily diffused to enhance responce. The diaphragm 7, for example, is made from acetyl cellulose.
