Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable optical guide circuits of low losses to be formed by synthesizing glass layers at high temperatures to form glass for waveguides of low scattering losses then forming the waveguide circuit patterns of a rectangular section through reactive sputter etching. CONSTITUTION:The first glass layer 31 is formed by a chemical vapor growth process by maintaining substrate temperature at 200 deg.C to 1650 deg.C on a substrate 20 which is made of refractory material and has flat surfaces, after which the second glass layer 32 of a refractive index higher than this is formed. Next, the third glass layer 33 of a refractive index lower than the second glass layer 32 is formed. Part of the third layer glass 33 is etched away according to desired patterns. After the additives for increasing refractive indices are allowed to evaporate from the surface of the second glass layer 32 having been exposed by the etching, the etched surface is covered with a glass layer 36 of a refractive index lower than that of the second glass layer 32.
