Abstract
PURPOSE:To enhance hot workability by melting the surface layer of the nickel base stainless steel slab sthrough continuous casting then freezing the same at the specific rate of cooling. CONSTITUTION:The surface layer the nickel base stainless steel slab having been frozen through continuous casting is remelted by plasma arc, etc., after which it is cooled to freeze at the rates of cooling above 3 deg.C/sec in succession. Such treatment obviates the production of internal cracks and makes spacings between the secondary dendrite arms 30mu or under, thus yielding the fine columnar crystal or equiaxial crystal. Since the surface layer of the slab which receives working particularly strongly becomes the foregoing structure (b) from the structure (a), the production of cracks, etc. during hot working such as hot rolling or other is reduced.
