Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the ruggedness of surfaces and cracking on account of rolling by blowing a nonoxidative gas to the surface of a copper wire rod right after taking up from a molten copper alloy thereby solidifying and cooling the copper alloy layer of the surface quickly. CONSTITUTION:The nonoxidative gas supplied through a gas supply pipe 14 into a crucible 1 is blown through a gas introduction port 15 into a barrier cylinder 8. It impinges upon the surface of a cast rod 2' right after taking up from the molten metal surface thereby cooling the rod 2' quickly. The gas passes through the space around the cast rod and is discharged into a cooling cylinder 12. Hence, the cast rod attains the temp. below the solidus line quickly in spite of the case when the concn. of the alloy is high, thus assuming a thoroughly solidified state. Since the nonoxidative gas is kept blown continuously after this, the remelting is prevented, and the generation of ruggedness on the surface is prevented.
