Abstract

PURPOSE: Coenzyme Q useful as a reagent for biochemical tests is extracted from cells of bacteria containing the same with sec-butyl alcohol or tert-amyl alcohol in a short time and high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The culture mixture resulting from the cultivation of a specific bacterium producing coenzyme Q, or the cells collected therefrom after the cultivation, or its aqueous suspension is subjected to extraction with sec-butyl alcohol or tert-amyl alcohol at room temperature, preferably at a pH of 10W11 under stirring for 1-several hr, whereby coenzyme Q is extracted. The extract is purified with silica gel chromatography and crystallized out of ethanol or the extract is concentrated, dissolved in acetone, treated with activated carbon, then cooled to form crystals, thus giving the crystals of coenzyme Q in high yield.
