Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to highly accurately detect a flaw of a test piece having a curvaure by turning the ultrasonic oscillator in a tire-shaped detector independently of the rotations of a tire.
CONSTITUTION: If a flaw is detected from the surface of a curved portion 3 while a tire-shaped detector 11 is being run, the oscillator 12 in a tire is continuously and reciprocally moved between positions 12b and 12c independently of the rotations of the tire within the range of an angle θ1 in accordance with the shape of a guide 23 thereby to guide the ultrasonic beam into a test piece within a range of angle θ2. With this scanning operation, the crack 8 can be irradiated at a right angle for the portion 7 of the test piece, which has a curved inner side, with the use of a beam coming tangentially with respect to the curved portion 7 so that a reflected beam having a sufficient intensity. The detector 11 is equipped with a turning mechanism and a swinging mechanism and is made capable of contacting with the curved surface to be detected so that the flaw detectivity can be remarkably improved.
