Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent burning of magnesium alloy without any conbustion preventive agent by blowing SF6 gas into mold sand beforehand in sand mold casting of magnesium alloy.
CONSTITUTION: SF6 gas is blown into a mold from a cylinder 3 from the pouring gate 4 of a sand mold composed of an upper flask molding 1 and a lower flask molding 2. The SF6 fills spaces of the pouring gate section 4, the runner section 5, the product section 6, and the feeder head section 7 while infiltrating into voids of the surface layer sand in the spaces. The SF6 colorless and odorless is extremely stable chemically. It also has a high heat resistivity, non-conbustibility, and corrosivity. The retention of the gas in the mold prevents the burning of the molten magnesium alloy without generating poisonous gas. Blowing of inert gas such as CO2 and N2 prior to the blowing of the SF6 could further improve the combustion preventing effect of the Mg alloy.
