Abstract

PURPOSE: To effectively reduce NOx and smoke from an internal-combustion engine by refluxing exhaust at all load ranges except the minimum and maximum, keeping the reflux quantity below the smoke limits.
CONSTITUTION: A Diesel engine 4 is provided with a fuel injection pump 1, whose load is detected by a load detector 3, and a signal is input to a valve opening controller 6, which drives a valve operator 5 and determines an opening of a recirculation valve 2 provided in the exhaust reflux passage. When the engine load is minimum or maximum, no reflux is performed. When the load is larger than the minimum and less than the maximum, recirculation is performed, and the reflux quantity is adjusted in accordance with the load and compared with a generating amount of smoke stored in the controller 6 so that amount of exhaust less than the same is always allowed to recirculate.
