Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress emission of HC and NOX to a minimum, by providing an exhaust gas recirculating (EGR) valve, driving means of the EGR valve and fuel amount detecting means and controlling the EGR valve in such a manner that an EGR rate is given by a specific expression. CONSTITUTION:An exhaust gas recirculating (EGR) valve, driving means of the EGR valve and fuel amount detecting means are provided, and the EGR valve is operated by the driving means of the EGR valve so that an EGR rate may be given by an expression as shown separately. In the expression, E is EGR rate (%), f is fuel amount (g/rev) per one revolution, (A/F)th is logical air-fuel ratio of fuel in use and the constant within a range of 14-15, G is suction gas amount (g/rev) per one revolution under a typical operating condition and the constant determined by an engine, and a is the constant within a range of 2.5-3.6. In this way, optimum EGR can be always operated so that emission of HC and NOX, harmful material, may be suppressed to a minimum.
