Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an analytical reagent, a solvent, etc., by reacting an acetal etc. with CO and O2 in the presence of specific substances as a catalyst and a reaction accelerator.
CONSTITUTION: An acetal or boric ester, e.g. 1,1-di-n-propoxy-n-butane, is reacted with CO and O2 in the presence of (A) metallic Pd or its salt and (B) a nitrite, e.g. n-butyl nitrite, or nitric acid, to give an oxalic diester, e.g. di-n-butyl oxalate, probably according to the reaction formula. The by-product formation can be suppressed with the simple catalyst system.
