Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a fuel gas, a reducing gas, a material gas for the chemical industry, etc., in high yield, by dry-distilling and gasifying coal and contacting the resulting gas containing high-molecular polycondensates with a catalyst in the presence of steam.
CONSTITUTION: Coal charged from a charge inlet 1 into a dry distillation/gasification zone 4, is contacted at 700W1,000°C, with steam and an oxygen-containing gas introduced from ports 2 and 3. Thereby, the coal is gasified. The resulting gas which contains high-molecular polycondensates such as coal tar is introduced to a gasification zone 6, wherein the gas is contacted with a catalyst consisting of an oxide of an alkaline earth metal or alkali metal, such as CaO or a potassium salt of a polyamic acid and thereby the high-molecular polycondensates are reacted with unreacted steam to produce H2, CO, CO2, etc., which are then removed from a gas discharge port 7. Ash and unreacted carbon entrained on the high-molecular polycondensates-containing gas are discharged suitably from an ash discharge port 5.
