Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a phosphor having a homogeneous chemical composition and stabilized fluorescent brightness, by firing a borate prepared by reacting magnesium carbonate or strontium carbonate with a fluoride, europium oxide and boric acid.
CONSTITUTION: Boric acid is added to a suspension prepared by mixing deionized water, magnesium carbonate or strontium carbonate, magnesium fluoride or strontium fluoride, and europium oxide, and the resulting mixture is heated to precipitate a borate. The precipitate produced is filtered by suction, dried and fired in an oxidizing atmosphere at about 700W900°C in an electric furnace. The fired product is ground and refired in an atmosphere of H2, N2 at 700W900°C, thereby to produce a europium-activated strontium magnesium fluoroborate phosphor represented by the formula.
